Clinic eXpressions Competition

NDCL students did better than ever in this year’s Cleveland Clinic eXpressions competition, winning the “Best in Show” and blue-ribbon awards in mathematics as well as blue and white ribbons and an honorable mention in art.

Sophomores Augie King and Zach Urda won the eXpressions Best in Show Award in Mathematics with their project “Missed Medication Errors Due to the Therapist.” Their achievement marks the first time NDCL has won the top eXpressions prize. In addition, the team juniors Reagan Hoyt, Haley Otto and Alyssa Rice and sophomore Valerie Raicevich won blue ribbons for their math project focusing on brain research.

Three NDCL artists won awards in the art category: senior McKenna Randall, blue ribbon; senior Caroline Pavlish, white ribbon; and junior Katherine Busch, honorable mention.

“Roughly 1,500 art, language and math projects from 51 schools were submitted,” explained Bryan Pflaum, the Cleveland Clinic’s director of civic education. “As a result, this year’s competition was incredibly tough.”

eXpressions is an interdisciplinary program that utilizes art, language and math to engage high school students in the world of scientific research. Through project-based, peer-to-peer learning, students interpret, analyze and communicate research conducted by Cleveland Clinic summer interns. Last year, three NDCL students won spots in the renowned summer internship program.

In addition to being featured in the eXpressions Art, Language and Math eXhibition at the Global Center for Health Innovation in downtown Cleveland, honorees and their projects will be highlighted in the program’s print and online catalogs. The exhibition at the Global Center will open on Feb. 9 with a formal dedication and reception.

Special thanks to NDCL’s mathematics department chairperson Marcia Pecek, art department chairperson Mary Ann Sedivy and art teacher George Yaniga for their efforts in the guiding our students’ award-winning eXpressions projects.
