Second Annual Cardboard Regatta

The seventh graders at Chagrin Falls Middle School are preparing for their second annual Cardboard Regatta as a part of a larger interdisciplinary unit. The event will take place on May 28 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Chagrin Valley Recreation Center pool.

Donations from this event will go to Water for South Sudan.

“This charity was chosen because it relates to the books “A Long Walk to Water” and “I Will Always Write Back,” which is read by the seventh-grade language arts class,” said teacher Brian Johnson.

The seventh-graders last year were able to raise nearly $12,000 for the charity. All money raised goes to help build freshwater wells in villages in South Sudan in order for the villagers have access to fresh water.

At the end of April, students will hear speakers from Cleveland Water and the Northeast Ohio Sewer District. These speakers will focus on what people can do locally to help keep the water clean and safe. They also will discuss the water treatment process and will give an overview of the distribution process, water quality and emerging technologies in the water industry.

Students also will hear from the local nonprofit organization Drink Local, Drink Tap. It is an organization that inspires individuals to recognize and solve water issues through creative education, events and the provision of water access to people in need.

“Drink Local, Drink Tap not only want to make sure we take care of our Great Lakes, but have a strong focus in Uganda and work each day to bring them clean water,” said Johnson.

In May, students will begin using their knowledge from math, science and Project Lead the Way/STEM  (Science, Technology, Math and Engineering) classes to create blueprints of their boats and then they will finally build their boats.

The regatta already has received donations from Lyndall Insurance, Duck Tape, Master Pizza, The Rec, Step In, Sugar and Frogs, The Golf Dome, Cowboy Restaurant, Brickhouse Burgers, Bell & Flower, Flip Side, Fireside Chagrin Pet and Garden, Geigers and the Chagrin Valley Chamber of Commerce. Chagrin Falls Educational Foundation also provided a grant to help support the regatta for the second straight year.

Donations are still being accepted. Email Brian Johnson at brian.johnson@chagrinschools.orgto donate. Allcommunity members are encouraged to attend and watch this exciting event.
