Heavy flames at the front of the rental home were in evidence when the department arrived, he said.
All four residents had evacuated and were treated for minor smoke inhalation, Geiss said.
There were no pets in the house.
Fire departments from Hambden and Munson townships as well as Kirtland responded to the fire on the northwest corner of Thwing and Auburn roads, Geiss said, adding the fire was under control within a few hours.
Both Thwing and Auburn roads were closed for a while, he said.
